The Citizen Scholar program was on hiatus during the COVID-19 pandemic years, from 2020 through spring 2022.
Mohammed Ba-Aoum, Industrial Design and Engineering. Project: "Interfaith in a STEM Context," an event aimed at empowering STEM students to be leaders in a globalized, technologically advanced world with many different cultures and religions.
Maria DeNunzio, Human Nutrition, Foods, and Exercise. Project: A retrospective evaluation of the 2020 Grow Wythe Us community garden, which has continued since the COVID-19 pandemic and now has a full-time garden manager.
Lehi Dowell, a Ph.D. student in Planning Governance and Globalization. Lehi, from Sutherlin, Oregon, earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of La Verne and his master’s degree from Florida International University. His project was with the Montgomery County VA Regional Tourism Office, conducting an Organizational Strategic Review
Cristina Marcillo, a Ph.D. student in Biological Systems Engineering, and a member of the Interfaces for Global Change Interdisciplinary Graduate Education Program. Originally from Boston, Cristina earned a bachelor’s degree from Saint Francis University. Her project was working with the community of San Rafael Las Flores in Guatemala on drinking water sampling and citizen science.
Martina Svyantek, of Auburn, Alabama, is an Individualized Interdisciplinary Ph.D. student. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Auburn University and her master’s degree from Virginia Tech. Her project involved being the GBT Conference Accessibility Coordinator.
Sarah Bush, of St. Marys, Penn., is a Ph.D. student in the Agricultural, Leadership, and Community Education program. Her project focused on creating a Teen Excellence in Leadership Institute (TELI) Handbook for youth programs in Virginia and across the country. She served as a leadership team member for the institute and worked with 4-H and FFA members across the state and found a need for such a handbook among Virginia programs and for those in other states wishing to replicate the commonwealth’s TELI model in their own programs. The handbook will be published by the Cooperative Extension Press. “I gained a great deal of insight into leadership program development, implementation, and evaluation,” Bush said of the process.
Fadoua El Moustaid, of Marrakesh, Morocco, is a PhD student in Biological Sciences. She mentored an undergraduate student using computer modeling to track disease and helped the student develop biological models to study the transmission process of West Nile Virus. “We met once a week to go over what he learned together and I explained to him the mathematical and statistical methods he needed to develop a model,” she said. That effort led to a new mentorship project with two undergraduate students. “Coming from a quantitative background myself, I understand their struggle and what they need to succeed and hopefully pursue a graduate degree,” she said.
Nicole Hersch, of San Diego, California, is earning a master’s degree in landscape architecture from the College of Architecture and Urban Studies. She created a case study of the Stroubles Creek Watershed focused on restoring its aesthetics. The project aims to support the current Stroubles Creek Restoration Initiative established in 2014 by starting a native plant propagation program. “My goal is to propagate 500 hundred plants for the Stroubles Creek Watershed and utilize my landscape architecture training to find locations for these plants,” she explained “This project will only be successful by building relationships and through community mobilization.”
Megan A. Lorincz, of Williamsburg, Virginia, who is earning a master’s degree in Higher Education and Student Affairs from the School of Education, focused on living learning and leadership for her project. She said the idea arose from thinking on how she could use her degree to give back to the local community. She combined her work with the student-led Oak Lane Community Council to create a service-learning project. “I facilitated the development of the philanthropic service plan from its inception to implementation,” she said. The group coordinated several clothing drives to benefit the Radford Clothing Bank, which gives free clothing to families who otherwise could not afford them.
Joanna Papadopoulos, of Ewing, New Jersey, is a Ph.D. student in the School of Education’s Curriculum & Instruction in Integrative STEM Education program. Her project, Hands on Science with a Dash of Math Night, created a community science evening at Antheil Elementary School in Ewing, Township that was held in February. There were games, demonstrations, activities, and a grand finale Soda and Mentos geyser show, performed by the school’s principal and assistant principal. “Hundreds of Ewing students, parents, and staff who have a passion for science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) attended this event to explore many different STEM activities,” she said.
Shelby Ward, of Bluefield, is a student in the Alliance for Social, Political, Ethical and Cultural Thought (ASPECT) program in the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences. Her work focused on participatory tourist mapping and autoethnography in Sri Lanka. This arose from talks with people who were affected by the tourism industry in that country. “I asked individuals to draw or map what they wanted tourists or strangers to know about Sri Lanka,” she said. Themes that emerged from the exercise included culture, former war zones, and nature. She hopes the data associated with the study will help illustrate “how maps influence social understandings of a country, including geopolitical implications of mapping a country, even or especially in tourist maps,” she said.
Putu Desy Apriliani, Bali, Indonesia, is a Ph.D. student in Planning, Governance, and Globalization. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Udayana University in Bali. Her project was Developing a Financial Literacy Workshop for Elementary School Students in a rural area of Bali.
Debarati Basu, of Kolkata, West Bengal, is a Ph.D. student in engineering education who earned a bachelor’s degree from West Bengal State University of Technology. Basu’s project was Hand-on Minds-on Environmental Education for Engineering Freshmen and Citizens.
Katie Brooks, of Appalachia, Va., is a Ph.D. student in Rhetoric and Writing in the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences. She earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Virginia at Wise. Her project was Bridging a Gap to Enhance First-Year Students’ Success Through Writing Instruction.
Catherine Bukowski, of Syracuse, New York, is a Ph.D. student in Forestry. She earned a bachelor’s degree from University of North Carolina at Asheville and a master’s degree from the State University of New York. She developed Putting Research into Action: The Hale-Y Community Food Forest in Blacksburg.
Sara Katherine Lamb Harrell, of Jackson, Mississippi, is a Ph.D. student in the Architecture and Design Research in the College of Architecture and Urban Studies. She earned a bachelor’s and a master’s degree from Mississippi State University. Her project was Hike it Baby! New River Valley, aimed at providing an outdoor recreational opportunity for local families so they could develop a sense of community and get out in nature.
Kathryn Little, of Homdel, New Jersey, and Jeannie M. Purchase, of Ellenswood, Georgia, both worked on the Flint Water Educational Outreach effort. Little is a master’s degree student in civil and environmental engineering and earned her bachelor’s degree from Princeton University. Purchase is a Ph.D. student in civil engineering who earned her bachelor’s degree at Clemson University.
Heather Elizabeth Lyne, of Amherst, Va., is a master’s student in the Public and International Affairs. She earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Georgia. Her project was Developing a Community Place-making Project on the Roanoke River Greenway. Her role involved consulting community leaders and local government officials to build momentum for the project and integrate public opinion and public history into the plan.
Thomas Murray, of Chicago, is a master’s of fine arts degree student in theatre arts. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Ball State University. He worked on The Right of Way: An Original Documentary Play, an interdisciplinary research project investigating the enduring conflict between motorists and bicyclists on shared city streets.
Bryanne Peterson, of Front Royal, Va., is a Ph.D. student in the School of Education. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Mary Baldwin College and a master’s degree at Virginia Tech. Her project was Introducing Radford City Schools Fifth Graders to Engineering Design.
Chantel Simpson, of Reidsville, North Carolina, is a Ph.D. student in Agricultural and Extension Education. She earned her bachelor’s degree from North Carolina A&T State University. Her project was Using the Community Capitals Framework for the Development of a Community Life Center.
