Philosophy Introduction

The Department of Philosophy's M.A. program is one of the top terminal M.A. programs in philosophy in the United States. Our faculty offer core graduate training in philosophy in the broadly analytic tradition, with particular strengths in the history of philosophy, value theory, and philosophy of science. Emerging areas of strength include core analytic philosophy (e.g. metaphysics and philosophy of language), social philosophy, and environmental philosophy. Many of our students enter with the intention of enriching their philosophical background and then going on to PhD studies in philosophy elsewhere.

Graduate Philosophy Club

The Graduate Students have a Graduate Philosophy Club, which regularly sponsors an annual national graduate conference. The conference features a keynote address by a prominent scholar and graduate presenters from PhD programs across the country.

PPE Speaker Series

The PPE Program offers a public speaker series that is integral to its degree programs. Each academic year, several guest speakers are invited to present their most recent work to PPE students and faculty at Virginia Tech as well as to the general public. PPE students have the opportunity to go for lunch or dinner with the guest speakers and thereby develop their academic and professional skills as well as have opportunities to network.

Philosophy Colloqia

The Department of Philosophy sponsors a regular colloquium series throughout the year, combining internal and external speakers, at least some of whom coordinate with one or more graduate seminars currently being offered.
